Ever think about what powers the internet? “Yeah”, you say, just a little server here and a little server there. Then there is fiber backbones, and ethernet cabling, and routers, and hubs, and switches, and... On top of that, you have to get power to everything, keep all the equipment cool, and then the issue of physical security comes up.
I just watched this video on CNET about the huge data center company Equinix. With over 18 data centers, they are a major backbone to the internet providing service for companies like MySpace, Bank of America, etc. In each of their data centers, they consume 10 megawatts of power, enough to power a suburb! In addition, they have generators and fuel to power the center for two days! Lots of great facts in there, and enough stuff to make your jaw drop listing to the rep spout off the numbers!
